Villa R | Urban Reconversion & Zen Sanctuary

Bucharest

Ongoing (2024)

Villa R represents an exercise in recovering and transforming a residential structure from the 1960s, located in the urban fabric of Bucharest. The architectural endeavor aims to re-envelope and repartition the existing building to adapt it to new housing needs, transforming a typical construction of its era into a sanctuary of tranquility and introspection. Inspired by the simplicity and rigor of Asian aesthetics, the proposed solution emphasizes the creation of personal refuge spaces, where architecture becomes a filter between external agitation and the client's restored balance.

The configuration of the interior space is dictated by the client's daily rituals, valuing tranquility and the tactile experience of dwelling. A central element is represented by the generous windows, whose deep sills are transformed into reading benches — places of respite that invite contemplation. This need for absolute privacy culminates in the private terrace, protected by a sculptural fretwork that fragments the light and outside glances. Here, the presence of a birch tree brings an organic touch to the space, creating a small secret garden, accessible only to the owner's senses.

The materiality of the villa reflects a dialogue between contemporary rigor and classic warmth. On the exterior, the wood cladding and exposed concrete are balanced by fine plasters and ample aluminum joinery, giving the building a sober and modern presence. The interior, on the other hand, is kept free of invasive technological elements, the center of gravity of the living room being the wood-burning fireplace and the extensive library. The atmosphere is defined by natural textures, parquet, and wallpaper, generating a warm and timeless ambiance, where every detail is subordinated to well-being and reconnecting with oneself.
